Work in Progress 2019

A new musical in development takes place at the Frank Lloyd Wright house Fallingwater during a 1939 meeting of Jewish community leaders. The musical works with the concept of interlocking precarious ecosystems: the house perched above a waterfall, dynamics within the Kaufmann family for whom the house was built, the tensions of different theories of change within the meeting, and the bigger ecology of geopolitics which the meeting aimed to influence. As the architecture of Fallingwater is developed around use of the cantilever, in the show this 1939 meeting is understood as a historical pivot-point. Edgar Kaufmann, jr has returned to this moment from the future, with knowledge of the devastations that followed in his family and in global events, intending to shift the story and revise history to stop the oncoming wars, the tragic death of his mother, and the coming climate crisis.
